Claude adds short-lived message threads for long API conversations
On 2 November, Anthropic announced message threads in beta for its Messages API. The feature is available through the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, Anthropic-managed Claude Models on Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. Original release notes.
Developers send the conversation once, then submit new messages with the previous response identifier. Anthropic claims this reduces request size and improves the time before a response begins in long conversations and agent loops. Tecrave has not independently tested that performance claim.
Tecrave analysis: A small business building a support assistant could ask its developer to evaluate this for conversations involving repeated order checks or tool calls. The practical test is whether it improves response times in that business’s workflow without weakening recovery when a session breaks.
The implementation guide says pricing and rate limits are unchanged. Threads expire five minutes after their last request and are deleted within one hour of last use. Applications must retain their own conversation copy and replay it when a thread cannot continue. Threads do not automatically enable prompt caching and are not eligible for zero data retention or HIPAA use. This is a developer integration to assess, rather than a new switch for ordinary Claude chats.
